Backing up to S3 is good. It isn't enough.

  • Your server needs write access to your bucket. If your site is hacked, an attacker can delete your backups, or quietly overwrite them with empty files.
  • Even with locked-down keys, your data still depends on one provider. Providers make mistakes too.
  • In 2024, a major cloud provider accidentally deleted the entire cloud account of a $135 billion pension fund. The fund recovered only because it had a copy somewhere else.
